Invest in the future of housing: Bluelands by Blue21 offers a bold solution on water

16 June 2025 |

The housing crisis asks for bold ideas

The Netherlands faces a critical housing shortage, over 600,000 new homes are needed by 2030. Yet the land to build them just isn’t there. At the same time, climate change is forcing us to rethink how and where we live. What if water, often seen as a barrier, could become an opportunity?

Introducing Bluelands: Affordable Housing on Water

Bluelands, an initiative by floating pioneers and Buccaneer resident Blue21, transforms inland waters into climate-resilient communities. With just 3% of the Netherlands’ inland waters, they could accommodate over 1 million floating homes. Bluelands makes floating homes accessible and affordable for students, young professionals, and everyone in need of a house.
