The largest energy storage project in Europe: Groundbreaking and not without challenges
When we read about GIGA Storage and the largest energy storage project in Europe, we were immediately activated. Besides the ongoing interest in battery technology, in this case, we are even more interested in how to reach this scale (and connection to the Dutch grid). This is why we have invited Dignus Heijning from GIGA Storage to tell us all about their Green Turtle project in Belgium, where they will develop a 600 MW energy storage project with a total capacity of 2,400 MWh.
Apart from this innovative project, we are also keen to learn about the broader perspective of the opportunities in the energy storage field. We are happy to announce that Lucas van Cappellen from CE Delft will help us draw this bigger perspective on home, local and large-scale batteries. What are the main conclusions of his research, where does he see the most valuable business cases and what is needed on the policy side for a sustainable and reliable energy system? Furthermore, we will dive into the bottlenecks for the large-scale implementation of storage solutions, such as the implementation within the current systems but also the needed investment security for flexibility.
We will wrap up with a panel discussion in which you can ask all types of questions to these two experts!
Program & speakers
17:30 hrs. Walk-in with drinks & bites
18:00 hrs. Start of the program
- Lucas van Cappellen, senior researcher from CE Delft. CE Delft contributes to a sustainable society with independent research and advice. For CE Delft Lucas researched topics such as the electrification of demanding industries, net congestion, security of energy supply, and sustainable electricity production.
- Dignus Heijning, business developer from GIGA Storage. GIGA Storage is a developer, manager and investor for large-scale energy storage projects in Europe. GIGA Storage is developing a gigantic battery park, called Green Turtle. This is the largest energy storage project in Europe. This project has a capacity of 600 megawatts and a storage capacity of 2,400 megawatt hours. The energy storage project will be located next to a new 380-kilovolt high-voltage station in Dilsen-Stokkem, Belgium, and is connected to the Dutch energy grid.
