How Buccaneer Delft accelerates maritime innovation

What does it take to move innovation beyond the idea stage?

In a recent interview with Pioneering Tech, Buccaneer Delft founder Joop Roodenburg shares how his experience in offshore engineering shaped a clear vision: innovation only matters when it works in practice.

For the past ten years, Buccaneer Delft has operated as an innovation hub in the centre of Delft, connecting startups with corporates, governments and knowledge institutes. The goal is simple. Not experimentation for its own sake, but building solutions that are technically sound, economically viable and operationally relevant.

From coincidence to community

The idea for Buccaneer started unexpectedly. Roodenburg came across the historic site in 2013 and decided to explore its potential with his network. What followed was a session that generated over a hundred ideas. Despite the diversity, a clear theme emerged: entrepreneurship, maritime innovation and the energy transition.

Today, that vision has turned into a dynamic ecosystem. Startups work alongside each other, supported by access to networks, meeting spaces and collaboration opportunities that are often hard to find elsewhere.

Built on real industry experience

Before founding Buccaneer, Roodenburg spent decades building Huisman into a global player in offshore equipment. That entrepreneurial journey still shapes Buccaneer today.

Startups are not only given space, but also guidance in refining their proposition and connecting with potential customers and partners. The focus is long-term: building companies that last, not just grow fast.

Several startups have already flown out as alumni, including successful examples like Tree Composites.

Connecting the ecosystem

Delft offers a unique environment, with strong links to TU Delft and organisations such as YES!Delft. Buccaneer plays a bridging role within this landscape. By organising events and bringing together researchers, founders and industry players, it helps translate ideas into applications. Because innovation rarely happens in isolation.

Progress comes from collaboration.
From testing ideas together.
From building real-world solutions.

A call for stronger industry foundations

In the interview, Roodenburg also highlights a broader challenge: maintaining a strong manufacturing base.

According to him, innovation and production go hand in hand. Without space, technical talent and consistent policy, it becomes difficult for companies to scale in Europe. For founders, this directly impacts the ability to grow and compete.

His message to entrepreneurs is clear:

“Stay curious. Focus on real market demand. Understand the people you work with.

And most importantly — meet, test, and build together.”

Because innovation is not just about ideas. It is about making them real.
