Buccaneer Panel at Offshore Energy: Can Regulatory Sandboxes Accelerate Innovation?

Can regulatory sandboxes accelerate maritime and offshore innovation?

The Wennink Report: The Route to Future Prosperity sends a clear message: the Netherlands needs to move faster if it wants to maintain its technological and economic position. Innovation and scaling are essential, but slow regulation and permitting are holding progress back. One of the report’s recommendations is to create more room for experimentation through regulatory sandboxes, allowing new technologies and approaches to be tested in practice while regulation develops alongside them.

That question is particularly relevant for the offshore energy and maritime sector. The energy transition requires new technologies to move from development to demonstration and commercial application much faster. The Wennink Report identifies Energy & Climate Technology as one of four strategic technology domains for the Netherlands and specifically calls for bringing speed and innovation back into rules and licensing.

So what could this mean for our industry?

On the second day of the Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference, we bring together different perspectives to explore one central question:

Could regulatory sandboxes become a real booster for offshore and maritime innovation?

Representatives from RVO, including Bart van Schooten, responsible for innovation in the North Sea, will join innovators from Buccaneer and PortXL, to discuss what is needed to accelerate innovation in practice.

The discussion will be led by Joep Athmer, former Board Member of Van Oord.

Join us and bring your perspective to the discussion.
