In 2021 we can expect the first hydrogen-powered water taxi to be operational. Rotterdam will be the first to have this commercial passenger vessel to sail entirely on hydrogen. Initiated by Envio and together with Watertaxi Rotterdam, Flying Fish and our very own Zepp Solutions they are the SWIM consortium.
The SWIM project is part of a shipping program called Thrust, which means ‘Towards hydrogen-based renewables used for ship transportation’. The goal of Thrust is to enable a shipping industry with zero emissions. The hydrogen-powered water taxi will set an example for the application of hydrogen in the shipping industry. A big step regarding the energy transition because eventually it can be upscaled to bigger ships as well.
Enviu is the organizing party in this project and will lead the technology adoption. The technical development of the boat is in hands by the Flying Fish and Zepp Solutions, one of our Buccaneers. Zepp Solutions is involved in the global design of the vessel, but ultimately their focus will be the development and supply of a hydrogen fuel cell system and the onboard hydrogen storage system.
Enviu will also develop the necessary infrastructure to sail on hydrogen. Together with the Port of Rotterdam they are looking for the right location to station a bunker where sustainable generated hydrogen can be refueled, for both onshore and offshore purposes.
The next upcoming months the consortium participants will go into a developing and testing phase.
